Embark on a Heritage Trail in the South of Mauritius, starting from the authentic village of Mahebourg, the oldest one in Mauritius with many secrets to discover and finishes at Bel Ombre a sustainable and ecological village.

Mahebourg

Located in the south-east of Mauritius, Mahebourg reminds us the early Dutch and French periods. Mahebourg has preserved much of its authenticity and charm thanks to its old traditional homes that still stand, its welcoming streets filled with friendly faces, and its local typical Mauritian food.

Visit the Rault Biscuit Factory founded in the late 1800s. It is thus, the first Manioc Biscuit Factory in the World. The Rault family started their family business in producing manioc biscuits on the northern boundary of Mahebourg. The crispy and crunchy square biscuits are prepared entirely by hand using a secret recipe which has been passed from generation to generation. Usually, when the factory is visited, visitors are guided for twenty minutes around the factory with the chance of tasting the sample product with a nice cup of tea.

Found at the complete left end of the Mahebourg waterfront, the Pointe des Regates most probably bears its name due to the place where ‘Regates’ competitions are organized every year since ages. Another famous part about this place is that it also actually bears a famous monument commemorating the Battle of Grand Port of 1810 where the British took over the island from the French, the latter occupying the island then.

Go for a culinary tour through the market and the streets of Mahébourg, you will get to taste the local Mauritian cuisine in local restaurants and stop at the stalls of various street food sellers, some of which are typical of Mahébourg that makes it so authentic. The specialties include “Dholl Puri”, “ Chana Puri”, “Mine Bouille Ourites” and not to miss the special “Gateaux piments” and “Merveilles”.

Discover more about Mauritius at the National History Museum. Located along the main road of the town, the museum will explain from the very beginning how the island was formed and till the British Colonies and so forth. Moreover, you get the opportunity of exploring the colonial building along with a tour-guide, who will not hesitate to answer all your questions as well as demonstrate his expertise in this domain. The museum contains the early maps of the island as well as the paintings of the island’s original fauna together with the national Dodo bird. There are also a few dodo bones in a glass case, along with those of other disappeared species such as the Red Rail and Rodrigues solitaire.
