Top five foodie experiences in Mauritius
- Alouda- Alouda is what the local search for on a busy hot day. It is a refreshment with a mixture of condense milk, basil seeds, jelly, ice and vanilla essence. It can very often be found in markets all around the island.
- Coconut- Coconut water is drunk straight out of the fruit, in front of market stalls and on beaches.The vendor cuts through the nut, in order to reach the heart of the fruit, where a straw is then inserted into the sweet water.
- Dim sum (Boulette)- These are delicious Chinese Cantonese food with Mauritian touch obviously called ‘Boulette’, which are steamed made from fish, chayote, meat and prawn. It can be found throughout the island.
- Seafood- You can choose from a variety of brightly-coloured tropical fish, giant prawns, calamari and lobsters which are easily avalaible. You can have it the way you want it: baked, grilled, fried, sautéed or à la Mauricienne (the typical Mauritian way) and rougaille-style. You can find the best seafood in the northern of Mauritius, especially Grand Bay.
- Dholl Puri- Dholl Puri can be found in every street food stalls all over Mauritius but the best place to get it is at Dewa Rose Hill or Bagatelle. It is a fried thin bread stuffed with ground yellow split peas and served in a pair with curries, rougaille and pickles or chutney, topped with chilli.
